The Art of Sami Yusuf
Voices of the Earth
‘Voices of the Earth’ is the opening track of Sami Yusuf’s album Ecstasy. It is performed entirely a cappella, using only the human voice as its source of sound.
‘It’s music that embodies the mythic concept that we are shaped by the Earth even as we shape it. This is the sound of ancestry, memory, and beginningless beginning.’
– Sami Yusuf
The composition begins where sound itself begins: not with rhythm or melody, but with a single, undivided note. It’s the pure potential from which all things emerge. Mongolian, Central Asian, North African, Iranian, Native American, European: these voices resonate as a primordial vibration, rising from the Realm of Creation much like dawn quietly revealing the contours of a hidden landscape.
From this initial note an expansive tapestry of vocal expressions unfold in an explosion of musical colours shaped by cultures and peoples across the world. These are the resonant threads that encircle the globe in sound.
The voices of the earth are distinct from one another while at the same time they are strands of one living, connected breath. This is the sound of beginnings, of the land of origins, and of that first journey from formlessness into form.
